Frequently Asked Questions

At what grade can my child start?
4th grade. We have teams from 10U through 18U.

How do I register?
We typically open registration in late October. The link will be on our Registration page.

When does the season start and end?
Tryouts are typically held in November. Practices begin in December, and tournaments start in January. The season wraps up mid-late April, or early May.

Does my child have to attend tryouts?
We hold tryouts/evaluations to determine each player's skill level to ensure each player is placed on a team that closely matches with their skills.

How are teams chosen?
In all age groups, players are evaluated by the director, coaches and/or outside judges at tryouts. Players are placed on teams according to age, skill level, and experience, as well as attitude.

Does Monti Club JO cut players?
We do our best to avoid cuts from the Monti Club JO program, however, our goal is to field competitive teams. Depending on numbers and tryout scores playtime is not equal and cuts are possible.

NOTE: If coaching our coaching staff is limited, cuts may also be made.

Members are always encouraged to distribute our club information to potential coaches. (See our coach page.)

Who is my child's coach?
Once determined, coaches will be listed on the website.

What does my player need to wear?
Players will be provided a club jersey upon registration to wear for tournaments. Players provide their own shorts, shoes, and kneepads.

Most volleyball players wear spandex shorts (2.5-4" inseam) to play and practice in, however, the only requirement for the tournaments is that the jerseys match and the bottoms are black.

T-shirts and spandex shorts are typically worn for practices. Spandex material is not required.

Where do I find practice schedules and tournament information?
Each team will have a team page on our website where this information can be found. https://www.monticlubvolleyball.com/page/show/7472098-teams
This team page is set up by the webmaster (board member) and managed by the coach and/or the team manager, who is typically a parent volunteer. Subscribing to the team page calendar is helpful in order to get information as soon as it is posted.

NOTE: Tournament information is often not distributed by tournament directors until the Thursday evening before the tournament. Coaches will distribute this information as it becomes available.

When will practices be?
Once coaches are determined and teams are formed, Community Education provides our club with available gym times. We then have the coaches alternate choosing which dates and times they prefer. Typically practices are held M-F, 5-7, or 7-9. Due to gym availability, practice times are not necessarily on consistent days/times.

Where will the practices be?
Practices are held at the Monticello High School, Monticello Middle School, Eastview Education Center, or Little Mountain Elementary.

How do play dates/tournaments work?
Most events are either "playdates" or "tournaments".

Playdates
Teams are scheduled for a set number of matches--usually in a "pool play" (group of 3-5 teams in one pool play each other) format. This event usually takes approximately four hours.

Tournaments
Teams will typically start in a "pool" of four teams. They will play all teams in that pool. Bracket play begins immediately after all pools have been completed. Seeding is determined by the win-loss record. Most tournaments are scheduled for a full day (8 am - 5 pm, give or take).

Each team usually referees at least one match (2-3 sets).

All events follow USAV rules.

What should I bring to tournaments?
Players are required to have their jerseys, shorts, and knee pads. Water and lunch/snacks are highly recommended. Concessions may or may not be provided. Blankets are often brought as player camp areas may be in hallways or gym floors.

Is transportation provided?
All players are responsible for their transportation to practice and events.

My player has other sports/activities that conflict with volleyball practices and/or tournaments. Should I still register?
It is possible to juggle other activities, however, playtime will be limited if absent from practices or tournaments. Coaches do try to coordinate the practice schedules with the players' availability, but it is not always possible to accommodate everyone as gym space is limited.

May my player participate in Monti Club JO if they do not attend a Monticello school?

Yes, the goal is to field a competitive team.  If, during tryouts, a decision needs to be made between a Monti player and a player that does not attend Monti schools and their evaluation is equal, the Monti player will be given the preferred placement.

My athlete no longer wants to participate. Can I get a refund?
It is our policy that Monti Club JO fees not be refunded after tryouts. If an injury occurs, please supply a note from the doctor and the Board will review the situation. NCR fees and jersey fees cannot be refunded.

I was unable to attend the Parent/Player Information meeting. What did I miss?
See the file on the forms/links page for the slide show that was presented at the informational meeting for the current year.

How do I add a guardian to my child's account so I am able to view my player's schedule, RSVP, etc.

How to Add Guardians

NOTE: Guardians do not receive text message notifications on behalf of the player profile.

Family members of an athlete can be added as "Guardians" to view the team schedule, RSVP to games and events, message team members, and edit the athlete's profile.

  1. Sign in and go to the Household tab of your dashboard.

  2. On an athlete sub-profile, click View Profile.

    • NOTE: You can not add a Guardian to the account owner's profile.

    • If you don't have a sub-profile for the athlete, you must add one through registration or by claiming a roster spot.

  3. On the right side, under the Guardians header, click the plus sign (+).

  4. Input the Guardian’s email address to invite them.

  5. Toggle which athlete profiles this Guardian should manage.

  6. Click Send Invitation.

Helpful Tip! The invited guardian will appear on the Guardians tab as "Pending" until they accept their invite in their dashboard. You can resend a guardian invite anytime by tapping Resend next to the Guardian's name. You will receive an email when the Guardian has accepted the invite.
